Diabetic Diets

Diabetic Diets are Extremely Important

By: Pamela Egan

Cellular imbalances due to imbalance of hormones, nutrients, toxins, and stress can lead to Diabetes. The main hormones responsible for diabetes and weight gain are insulin, cortisol, and thyroid. In times of stress, the stress hormone cortisol increases and makes things worse.

As we age, we all become “insulin resistant”. In this state, we store fat in insulin-dependent areas such as the lower abdomen, thighs, under arms and under chin. We find ourselves faced with “stubborn” weight and fat, which is resistant to calorie restriction and exercise.

Diabetic diets usually help to restore an optimal balance of hormones and nutrients while reducing toxins and alkalinizing the body. Our bodies simply can’t tolerate the high sugar load that we have been feeding it.  This is especially true for diabetics.

We you overeat on high glycemic carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, and sugar, it causes insulin swings and we store fat. When insulin and sugars swing low, approximately 30 – 60 minutes after a meal, we crash (i.e. cravings, severe fatigue, headache, dizziness) hence a diabetic diet is needed.

The diabetic diets I have designed and recommend to my patients are much stricter than that recommended by the American Diabetes Association. I recommend that you avoid high glycemic carbs and sugar all together for a few weeks to give your pancreas a rest.

In addition, a proper diabetes diet will take into account the nutrition information and the relative nutrient values associated with the foods being considered for inclusion within the diet's parameters.

To reverse insulin resistance, my diabetic diet recommends that you drink the juice of half a lemon in a cup of warm water twice a day in an effort to alkalinize the body. Drink at least two quarts of pure water every day. Eat unlimited vegetables and protein, 2-3 fruit servings/ day. Gradually add three servings of high glycemic carbs/ day. Utilize yoga, stretching, meditation, and stress management techniques.

By following a strict diabetic diet, you can lose 10% of your body weight that will help to sensitize your muscles, reduce insulin resistance, and reset your pancreas.
